In the spring of 1717, a 28-year-old Devonshire sailor named Samuel Bellamy was heading home to Cape Cod with the largest pirate haul in recorded history. In fourteen months of piracy he had captured more than fifty ships, freed the enslaved crew of a three-masted slave vessel called the Whydah Gally, and run his ship as a floating democracy — every man with a vote and a share. On the night of April 26, a nor'easter caught the Whydah five hundred feet off the Wellfleet dunes. One hundred and forty-four men drowned. Two survived. Bellamy was not one of them.
In this episode, we ask Black Sam Bellamy the same five questions we ask every figure in the series. He speaks about what the Cape demands, what strangers miss when they arrive, why he fears the loss of liberty more than the loss of his ship, and what the sea really means to a man who has staked everything on it. The wreck of the Whydah was discovered in 1984 — the only fully authenticated Golden Age pirate shipwreck in the world. You can visit the site and the museum today.
Walk in His Footsteps
Start at Marconi Beach in Wellfleet, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Park in the main lot, walk out to the bluff, and face the Atlantic. Look directly east, five hundred feet into the surf — that is where the Whydah broke apart on the night of April 26, 1717. Then drive thirty minutes south to the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth (674 Main St). The ship's bell is there. So are the names. If you can do them in that order — bluff first, then museum — you'll understand the difference between the Cape's two histories: the one in the sand, and the one behind glass.
